Stella & Will & Pool Cue

In this episode of the show, we discuss Five Feet Apart by Rachael Lippincott. Another contemporary realistic fiction book? What's going on?!

Honestly?

We needed filler before THE SUMMER OF HARRY POTTER!

We didn't want to start a new series and we needed a standalone, so we read Five Feet Apart! And it was pretty good! Amber cried when she read it, though. I didn't, but that's probably because I don't have a soul. I will admit that I did get a little misty-eyed watching the movie, but there was no sobbing involved on my part.

Well, what happens in this book? Stella has cystic fibrosis and she's in the hospital having a treatment instead of going on her senior trip with her friends. Lame! She's used to being in the hospital and is a good patient, taking all her medication and working really hard to stay on the transplant list. Will, however, is not. He's tired of everyone telling him what to do all the time and just wants to live during the little time he has left. Until he meets Stella that is. She helps him realize he needs to be able to live, you know, to live! And what better way to live than with a crush and a first love? But wait... Don't they have to stay Five Feet Apart? Hmm...

So, while I don't have CF, I do have a chronic illness (type 1 diabetes, woo!), and I related to Will quite a bit. I struggled with my diabetes when I was a teenager and got really upset about always having to check my sugar level and always taking shots and not being able to eat what I wanted when I wanted, so I rebelled. I got over it, thank goodness, otherwise I wouldn't be here, but probably no one really cares about that. If you do, let's chat! I'm always willing to talk diabetes with anyone who wants to know anything about my experience with it.

Anyway, I didn't dress up for this one, just like I didn't dress up for last week's episode. (Another realistic fiction book, We Were Liars. See post about that one here.) I didn't think it would be a good idea to cosplay a kid with a terminal illness. Here's our regular old, non-costumed recording picture.

Also, hey, did you know that you can buy a myriad of merchandise in tons of great styles and colors with that clever title from our Spreadshirt shop? We get a tiny amount of money when you buy from our shop, so you should probably buy something.

Okay, that's enough.
