After jumping on the train to escape the Dauntless compound after shutting down the simulation Jeanine created to make the Dauntless kill the Abnegation and stealing the hard drive the simulation was on, Tris, Four, Caleb, Peter and Marcus arrive at the Amity farms and meet an Amity leader, Johanna Reyes. She offers to let them stay overnight, but insists that the entire faction will decide if they can stay longer. The others from Abnegation who managed to escape have settled in for the night already and Tris is given a tea to help her sleep a dreamless sleep.

Tris wakes from a nightmare featuring Will, guess the tea didn't work, questioning why she didn't just shoot him in the hand instead of straight up murdering him while he was under the simulation. Four comes to check on her but she's not doing well, obviously. The Amity asked that the Dauntless turn over any weapons they had when they arrived, but Four insisted that Tris keep her gun that she now hides under the mattress of her bed. She hides the hard drive with the simulation data behind the dresser. Tris decides to cut her long hair after having memories of her dead mother helping tend her hair in the past.

The Amity gather together to discuss allowing their Abnegation, Erudite and Dauntless guests to stay. They don't have a leader because they all work together on literally everything, though Johanna speaks for them when necessary. Everyone gathered discusses in small groups until they make their decision to let anyone stay with them as long as they don't talk about what happened with anyone at any time, they don't fight verbally or physically, they don't bring weapons of any kind, and they help out by doing various jobs. Tris and Four know they won't last long.

Later, Tris spots Marcus and Johanna walking together in an orchard so she decides to follow them. She hears them talking about Jeanine deciding to attack Abnegation. Marcus shares that the Abnegation leaders, everyone's leaders, have knowledge passed down to them from the beforetimes, but he won't reveal what it is, only that it is very important. Johanna wishes that Marcus would trust her to share, but the last time he revealed any information, all his friends wound up dead. Tris goes to tell Four this but he just thinks his father is trying to make himself seem more important than he actually is and remain relevant as a leader. Four wants to go into the city and figure out what to do next and worry about what Marcus said later. Tris resolves not to forget what she heard and learn more about it, whether Four wants her to or not.

While they eat breakfast the next day, Caleb is curious about everything and asks Tris about her test results and she reveals that she had aptitude for three factions, which he's never heard of. Marcus interrupts their breakfast and says the Abnegation want to leave Amity and go back to the city so as not to be selfish and requests Tris and Four escort them. They agree and plan to leave in a few days.

Tris follows Marcus again and confronts him about what she overheard but he's just a dick to her. She wants to know if her father died protecting the secret, whatever it was, and he says yes, but won't say anything about what the secret is. He tells Tris she got lucky and that's the only way she survived what happened and she probably won't ever do anything else useful again. He's a dick.

Tris goes to Four's room that night after having another Will nightmare but she hasn't told him about that yet. They kiss a lot and she falls asleep to his I love you. The next day, when she goes back to her room, Peter is there and he's stolen the hard drive, so Tris tries to get it back by punching him in his bullet wound, but misses. They fight and scream and the Amity come running. They have broken their peace vows.

Tris is taken to the Conflict Room where she thinks the Amity are putting her in time out. Instead, they inject her against her will with a serum that she can't fight off that makes her very silly and loopy. She merrily skips off to find Four in the orchard and he is shocked by her silliness. He carries Tris to Johanna, demanding to know what they've done to her. Johanna says she must have been given too much serum and Four is very angry that the Amity drug their faction into compliance, joking that they probably even put the serum into the water. He does not laugh when she says not the water, but maybe they should avoid the bread.

After she has returned to herself, Tris asks Four why she couldn't fight this serum off, and they decide she probably could have if she wanted to, and she agrees that he's probably right. She enjoyed not thinking about horrible things for a few hours. Later, Tris is avoiding people by hanging out in the orchard when she sees Erudite vehicles approaching. She runs to find Four and they quickly alert everyone who is in hiding. They all scramble to change into Amity clothes, trying to blend in, and Tris destroys the hard drive. Four knows that Johanna won't give them away in order to avoid conflict, but even the best ditzy acting and red and yellow clothes can't conceal Four’s Dauntless posture and tattoos, so they are discovered. The Dauntless guards and Erudite have brought guns and they start blazing. Tris pushes Peter out of the way of a bullet, but freezes when it comes time to shoot back. Caleb steps in and saves Four and they, along with their old Abnegation friend Susan, run, but Four is upset that Tris froze.

After trudging along for a while, they decide to jump on a train, but the train is not empty, it is full of Factionless led by a young man with an eye patch, Edward. Luckily Tris was nice to Edward during their initiation and helped him when Peter stabbed him in the eye with a butter knife, but the Factionless aren't pleased to have newcomers on their train. They are about to force them off when Four calls himself by his real full name, Tobias Eaton. The Factionless are shocked but Tris doesn't understand why. 

When they arrive in the Factionless part of the city, the group is led to meet the leader of the Factionless who turns out to be Four’s mother, Evelyn. Tris thought she was dead, even remembers her funeral, but no, she cheated on Marcus and escaped Abnegation, leaving young Tobias behind with his abusive father. He clearly does not have any affection for his mother at all, but she knows that he doesn't like what's going on with the Factions and asks if he's come to help. She sent him a message about a year ago, so he knew she was still alive and leading the Factionless, but he isn't keen on helping her. 

That night, Tris wakes when she hears Four talking to Evelyn. It seems she's trying to apologize to Four for abandoning him, but he shuts that down quickly. She then tells him that the Abnegation were testing the Factionless and discovered that many of them are Divergent, which makes sense if you think about it. They don't fit into one Faction, so they fail out of initiation or leave their Factions and become Factionless. Many also come from Abnegation.

Evelyn knows that her son is Divergent because Marcus knew, which is why she left them together. Now, Evelyn and the Factionless have maps of safehouses all over and are planning to overtake Erudite and create a new society without Factions, and she needs the Dauntless to help. Most of the Dauntless remained with the Erudite, the traitors, and many of the others, the loyal, have gone to Candor, so that is where Four wants to go next. Four comes back to sleep next to Tris but before she gathers the courage to ask him about what's going on, he's asleep.

The next day, Susan and Caleb plan to go to a safehouse where most of the remaining Abnegation have gone while Tris and Four go to Candor, but Caleb promises to try to catch up with them later. When Tris and Four arrive at Candor headquarters, they are arrested. The Candor aren't super forthcoming with their arrest, but then reveal that they saw the footage, but what! the hard drive!, and what they saw was Four controlling the simulation and Tris helping. They have to go on trial which, in Candor, involves being questioned under truth serum.

Christina finds them and escorts them to their questioning. Four goes first and reveals his real name, Tobias Eaton, to everyone which is a Big Deal™ and explains being Divergent and that he wasn't under the first serum like all the other Dauntless. The second serum that Jeanine gave only to him made him think his friends were his enemies, so it wasn't a simulation that he could break out of as a Divergent. Christina asks Tris about all this and she confirms it and also that she is Divergent, too.

They continue questioning Four, trying to determine his loyalty, and it seems like he is able to fight the truth serum, but they ultimately believe him. He says he left Abnegation because he was afraid of his father, which makes him a coward, so he must not actually be Dauntless. The last question Four is asked is his biggest regret, and he admits to wanting to leave Dauntless, thinking Abnegation was his true home and deciding to be Factionless instead, but changing his mind and staying after meeting her. Tris?

When it is Tris's turn, her real name, Beatrice Pryor, is not such a Big Deal™. She tries to fight the serum and is able to but it's difficult. She reveals that she is also Divergent and that she is too selfish for Abnegation but doesn't think she's Dauntless enough for Dauntless, but the Candor leader questioning her assures her that she is because she was almost murdered by the Erudite but fought her way through the Dauntless compound, being attacked by her friends, to destroy the simulation and save everyone.

Finally she is asked her greatest regret and she doesn't want to admit to killing Will, but she eventually does. She thinks about her plan to give up her life for Four to try to break him out of the simulation and also sacrificing herself over and over again in the fear landscapes, but when it came to Will, she just straight up shot him. That is her biggest regret. She didn't have to say it because of her control over the serum, but she needed to get it off her chest. Four and Christina don't look at her when she is finished.

Uriah finds Tris after her trial is over and tells her that Christina will get over the fact that Tris shot her boyfriend because she did what she had to do to save all of the Dauntless from being Erudite puppets, but Tris isn't so sure. She's upset with herself and decides to throw a chair off the roof and then maybe just jump off herself, Al-style, but decides against it. 

Later, Tris and Four argue about telling each other the truth since neither of them have been exactly forthcoming, Tris with killing Will, Four with his mother being a Factionless leader and him maybe wanting to join her. He tells her it's not exactly easy being with her and she apologizes, but that's not enough? She also says that she chose to share what happened with Will while under the truth serum because she could fight it, just like the other serums.

That night, Tris, with Lynn, Uriah, Marlene and many of the other loyal Dauntless, minus Four and Christina, are going to spy on the Erudite but are almost immediately attacked by the traitorous Dauntless wearing blue Erudite armbands. Everyone starts shooting and Tris goes down when a cloud of vapor erupts around everyone. She soon realizes she is not affected by the smoke, so it must be another serum in gas form. She realizes Uriah isn't affected either so he is also Divergent. They split up to start searching for others to help them escape but soon Eric arrives and finds Tris. 

Tris tries to fight Eric but is captured and held at gunpoint with several other Divergent. Then she remembers that she has a knife in her pocket. Eric says he's only going to take two Divergent with him to Erudite headquarters and will kill the rest. After he kills a young boy, Tris screams and stabs Eric, but not fatally. Uriah takes the opportunity to attack as well and soon many loyal Dauntless arrive, led by Four.

Eric is taken prisoner while Tris and Four try to figure out what's going on. Tris pulls a giant weird tracker out of her shoulder and they realize that the Erudite put everyone to sleep to figure out who is Divergent. Four learned from his Factionless mother that Candor has the next highest percentage of Divergent, after the Factionless and Abnegation, so it makes sense that they would attack them next because they can't easily attack the Factionless since they are all over the city. They then determine that the weird tracker thing that everyone was shot with must contain a long-lasting simulation serum.

The Candor leader, Jack, calls everyone to a meeting. He asks all the Divergent to come forward and Tris is surprised that Marcus, who recently arrived with Caleb, is one: alive and two: Divergent. Jack asks them why Jeanine would have attacked and when Tris and Four explain about the long-lasting transmitters, he dismisses them. He seems to think that if Jeanine was truly evil, she would have killed everyone, not understanding that being under simulation and forced to do things you don't want to do is probably worse. He decides that he's going to have peace-talks with Jeanine which are definitely going to work and are not a terrible, terrible idea. He tells the Dauntless and Divergent that they are more than welcome to attack Erudite, but the Candor will not support them. Tris realizes there's no way they can take on Erudite without Candor… unless they go to the Factionless.

After the meeting, Zeke, Uriah’s older brother, and Tori show up, wounded. Everyone thought Zeke was a traitorous Dauntless, but he was actually a spy, and Tori probably just wanted to kill everyone in Erudite because they killed her Divergent brother, but only Tris knows that. As everyone is celebrating Zeke's return, Tris sees Christina walk off with Will’s sister Cara and follows. Cara is oddly standing up for Tris killing Will but understands Christina not wanting to be friends with her anymore, surprised that she was ever friends with her at all. Maybe she will change Christina’s mind, but probably not. 

The loyal Dauntless and Divergent decide they need to know what will happen in the meeting with Jack and Jeanine. Four tells them that Jack is taking a group with him for protection and one of them will report back, but adds that Jeanine isn't going to the meeting, she's sending a representative instead. They really want to know what's going on for themselves, so several of them decide to eavesdrop.

As everyone eats in the Candor cafeteria, several Dauntless pass by Four and call him a coward, just like he said in his Candor trial and just like they've been doing constantly since. He gets fed up and decides to go hit his father with his belt, just like Marcus used to do to him. Tris rushes up to stop the attack and follows Four out of the cafeteria. He is mad that she suddenly cares about him again after they haven't really spoken like they like-like each other for weeks, or is she just feeling sorry for Marcus? He leaves her standing there alone. Tris then follows Marcus and tells him that if he ever decides he’s going to do anything about literally anything, he knows who he'll have to come to.

Later, before Tris goes off to eavesdrop on the meeting between Jack and not-Jeanine, she asks why Four did what he did because the public spanking didn't really make any sense. Why should anyone, especially Four, care if people think he's a coward? Then she remembers that his Factionless mother wants him to be a leader of the loyal Dauntless. He can't be their leader if they think he's a coward, thus the public spanking. Four then confronts Tris about going to eavesdrop and decides to go with her.

The meeting does not go well. Max, a Dauntless leader who is now a traitor Dauntless, is there instead of Jeanine, asking Jack to give up the Divergents, return Eric and tell them who did not get shot by the trackers. Tris realizes Jeanine is speaking to Max through an earpiece and controlling him. She spots a location where Jeanine is likely hiding and heads toward it, but then one of the loyal Dauntless shoots Max, ending the meeting. Tris, followed by Four, finds Peter, another traitor Dauntless, and Jeanine running away, but then their friends scream so they turn back to help instead of giving chase.

When they get back to Candor headquarters, Four tells Tris that if she's going to continue to be reckless and constantly try to sacrifice herself, then they are finished. He loves the Tris who tries to solve problems and help people and do the right thing, not the one that consistently puts herself in danger and really seems to want to kill herself. He loves the Divergent Tris, not the Dauntless one. 

The loyal Dauntless, all sure that Jack is going to give in to Jeanine's demands, decide they need to determine what happens with Eric, namely, do they execute him, because he is Dauntless, even if he is a traitor, but they say that only the Dauntless leaders get to make decisions like that. Since all the Dauntless leaders are traitors, they elect new ones: Tori, some guy we don't know, Harrison, and Four. Just what Evelyn wanted. They try to elect Tris, but she declines.

Eric's execution is relatively painless, though he does taunt Four and tell Tris she is guilty of everything he is. Luckily he demands Four be the one to do it instead of the weird Russian roulette thing he was setting up. The Dauntess then decide to go back home. As they are preparing to leave, Jack makes an announcement that all who were not shot with the tracker must report to him, so yes, he's giving in to Jeanine's demands. They all rush out past him and then he realizes that Eric is dead, so he won't be able to meet Jeanine's demands.

Back at Dauntless headquarters, they shoot out the surveillance cameras that are all over the place, thanks Erudite, with paintballs and then they play together and eat chocolate cake. Four pulls Tris aside and asks her to go with him to a meeting with his mother. They hop a train and meet up with Evelyn and Edward. They agree to an alliance and decide to meet up later in Abnegation to plan things, but Tris doesn't think they should trust Evelyn. She thinks she is using Four for something. She wants to question Marcus and see what else he knows, but Four doesn't want to do that. They fight again.

Tris is shaken awake by Christina and they run to the roof where three Dauntless are standing on the ledge. One speaks, but her voice is not her own and it's clear that Jeanine is speaking. Until one of the Divergent turns themself in to Erudite headquarters, this will happen every two days. This is jumping off the roof. Tris and Christina manage to save two of the three, but Marlene, their muffin friend, plummets to her death. Jeanine made them do that. Tris decides she's going to be the one to go to Erudite to stop more innocent people from dying.

Tris constantly thinks of killing Will and letting Marlene die and breaks down. Christina approaches and tells her that at first she didn't believe her when she said she had to kill Will when he was under the simulation, but now, having seen Marlene mindlessly die, she understands and forgives Tris.

In the cafeteria, a lot of people are divided. Some Dauntless are angry or afraid of the Divergent and want them all to give themselves up. Some, mostly the Divergent, want to storm Erudite and fight. Tris just wants to give herself up. Four, Tori and Harrison approach with a plan to increase security and try to stop the mind-controlling before it gets to death level again, but if that doesn't work, they will come up with another plan. No one will sacrifice themself. Four looks directly at Tris when saying this last bit, but she's determined to go. 

Tris finds herself in Four’s apartment later because it was the last place she felt safe. He comes in moments later and she of course says she's going to turn herself in. He makes her promise she won't, for him, and she does, but she's lying. They kiss and Four falls asleep tightly and safely holding Tris.

When Four is asleep, Tris tells him she loves him and leaves his room. She goes to Christina and tells her she's going to see Caleb in Abnegation and that she knows why Jeanine is killing people. She says it's because the Abnegation have some sort of information she wants that Marcus has, so they need to figure out a way to make him talk. Tris tells Christina she thinks she, Christina, will be able to make that happen. She will be back from Abnegation in a few days and they will make a plan. Christina doesn't seem to think Tris is being honest, but goes along with it.

Tris leaves Dauntless and walks immediately to Erudite. She demands to see Jeanine, but Peter and some cronies come to collect her and lock her in a room. Jeanine visits later and takes Tris on a tour, telling her that they are going to study her brain and then kill her. Jeanine is happy that Tris was the Divergent that came because she has aptitudes for three factions where most if not all other Divergents only have two. Tris questions how she knows about her three aptitudes, but she doesn't answer. She thinks Tris is the strongest Divergent and will use her brain to perfect the serums. She puts Tris in an MRI machine and Tris agrees to the scan if she can see the results.

The results are that Tris’s brain is big. Her prefrontal cortex is much larger but her orbitofrontal cortex is much smaller, meaning that Tris is very good at focusing on goals but has almost no reward-seeking desire. Jeanine is pleased with the results and now knows how to modify the serum to work on her. She sends Tris back to her cell, escorted of course by Peter. Peter wonders why Tris is so special and always gets what she wants and also why she is stupid enough to sacrifice herself, but he'll never understand. Just before they get to her room, Tris sees that Four has come. As he is dragged off to his cell, he tells her that she came to die so now he's going to die too. Peter doesn't get it, Four can just get another girlfriend after Tris dies. Again… Peter will never understand.

Tris is taken to test a serum. She sees her mother in the simulation describing how Erudite is going to help everyone, but then she breaks out of the simulation when she remembers that her mother is dead. Jeanine will just have to try harder with the changes she's developed from the results of the brain scan. And she does! Next is an original version of the fear landscapes that were too potent. Four is brought in to watch in the hopes that Tris being afraid will make him tell Jeanine where the Factionless safehouses are, and it works. Tris sees Four smilingly stabbing himself in the stomach and lots of attacking birds and other horrors, but then she's out. Jeanine then tells Tris who has been helping her, who told her about her three aptitudes. Caleb.

Back in her cell, Tris tries to figure out why Caleb would be helping Jeanine but can't really come up with anything. Peter brings Tris some food and water and escorts her to a shower. He seems slightly less horrible than usual and asks Tris if her brain is broken, but it's not, not yet. As they are walking down the hall, Tris sees Four with his guards. When they pass each other, he collapses, but it's only a ruse. He steals a gun, grabs Tris, and they run… straight past an exit. Four tells Tris they aren't escaping but finding the control room. He and the other leaders have discovered that Jeanine plans to execute Tris in two weeks because by then she will have completed the serum she is working on. He begs Tris to survive until then when the loyal Dauntless, the Divergent and the Factionless will attack. She doesn't think she can. 

Later without any sort of punishment from running off with Four, Tris gets to talk to Caleb. She asks him when he became a traitor but he says he's doing everything for the good of everyone and for what's happening outside the walls. Tris isn't able to make Caleb see reason. She's tired all the time now from all the testing. Luckily Four comes for her again and even though he's missing part of his ear and is covered in blood, he picks her up and they run to escape. Tris realizes she is in a simulation and fabricates a knife and stabs herself. Jeanine is furious and Tris feels like she's winning against her by making her so crazy.

Peter tells Tris that her execution will be the next day, earlier than Four’s plans. He tells her that Jeanine will continue her testing on Four. Tris says she could have forgiven Peter, but he doesn't seem to care, although he is weirdly kind again. Tris is led to a room with a heart monitor and strapped down. Before Jeanine injects her with a purple serum, Tris realizes she doesn't want to die. She shouldn't sacrifice herself to be with her parents or to pay for killing Will, she should learn from them and live. Peter tells Tris to be brave, the same thing that Four said to her before injecting her with the fear landscape serum the first time. The heart monitor stops beeping.

Peter offers to take Tris to the autopsy room, but instead he carries her to Four and they run. Tris is somehow still alive and Peter is somehow helping. He swapped the serum and hooked her up to a faulty heart monitor. They make it out of Erudite headquarters and hide for a little while. Tris asks why Peter helped her when he's always wanted her dead and he reveals his entire way of living his life is to not be in anyone's debt. Tris saved him during the attack on Amity so he had to save her, not willing to owe anything to a Stiff.

They make it to the Abnegation part of the city and go to Four's old house. Tori, Harrison and Evelyn are there having kicked Marcus out. Tris is still wary of Evelyn using Four for something, but he takes her up to his room and gets her cleaned up. He washes her feet in the bathtub and she washes his hands and then they kiss and she says out loud to him for the first time when he's aware that she loves him. She breaks down because everyone in her family is either dead or a traitor but Four declares he is her family now.

The next day, pretty much everyone is gathered together, happy and carefree. Tris realizes after watching Four that this is where he is meant to be, leading people who are outside of just one faction and way of life. She slips away to go for a walk and runs into Marcus. He tells her that he can't tell her the important thing that the Abnegation leaders know because she won't understand it until she sees it. She thinks he's just toying with her and says she knows that it has something to do with outside the walls. Marcus tells her they were put there, but he was right, she doesn't get it. He says Jeanine has the information now and she knows she needs to get to it.

After Tris leaves Marcus, she finds everyone standing outside, Evelyn, Four, Tori and Harrison in front of them. Anyone not implanted with a tracker will be attacking Erudite headquarters in three days. Christina and Tris question this. They're just going to bust into a faction and kill everyone there? Isn't that literally what Erudite just did to the Abnegation? The leaders have decided that anyone who is against Jeanine will have left Erudite, so everyone who is still there must be on the wrong side. They will break up into teams and have plans ready that they will share soon. 

Four tells Tris that she will be on his team but she lies and says she doesn't want to sacrifice herself anymore after everything she's been through and he wants her to stay behind and rest when they go fight. She of course actually wants to find out what Jeanine knows and stop them from killing all the Erudite. 

Tris and Christina go with Marcus to Amity to speak to Johanna. They want her to know what is about to happen and maybe to get Amity's help. Joanna tells her faction about the upcoming attack and most of them want to remain uninvolved, but Johanna and a handful of others will go to Erudite to be peaceful protestors of the violence. Tris and Christina plan to speak to the Erudite that have found sanctuary in Amity, asking for their help in finding out what Jeanine knows.

They find out that the computers in Erudite are connected to computers in the other factions so Jeanine won't be the only person who has access to the files. They also find out that the Erudite have been working on non-lethal weapons and will be going with them to help find the information they are looking for. One Erudite, Will’s older sister Cara, has created a stun gun, and another, Fernando, has a sonic detonator that can shatter glass. It was used when the Erudite attacked Candor. 

Marcus, Tris, Christina, Cara and Fernando head into the city and toward Erudite while Johanna leads another group to peacefully protest. After Tris's group changes into blue Erudite clothes, Christina gives Tris a gun, telling her that Will would tell her to get over her aversion to using them. Yeah, he would if she hadn't shot him in the head. No! Stop thinking like that. They get to the Erudite headquarters and see it protected on all sides by simulation-controlled Candors with guns. They decide they can't get inside through the doors and when Cara jokes about taking the roofs, Tris gets an idea to go through the windows on upper floors instead. Fernando defines her as Insurgent, a person who acts in opposition to the established authority, who is not necessarily regarded as belligerent, and she likes it.

They find windows in a building across the street that line up and find a ladder to stretch across. Using Fernando’s sonic detonator, they shatter the windows, and when the glass falls onto the Candor below, they shoot upward. It seems they are only aware of movement? Tris goes across first into an occupied bathroom. She holds her gun up to the woman in there who is surprised to see an Erudite with a gun. Oh yeah, the blue shirt. Tris pretends to be an Erudite who climbed through a window on a ladder to retrieve important data and somehow the woman goes along with it? Everyone climbs across, but Fernando loses his glasses along the way and when they hit the ground, the Candor shoot him.

Cara leads the way through Erudite to a control room. She and Marcus search for files but then Caleb shows up with a gun. He wants to stop them from getting the information because releasing it will ruin everything. Marcus says they were sent here with a mission and it's time to do what they were meant to do. Tris doesn't understand any of this. After Tris calls Caleb a coward, he says Jeanine wouldn't keep important information on a public computer. Tris only knows of two private computers of Jeanine's, one in her office and one in her lab. Marcus knocks Caleb out and he, Tris and Christina go to the lab while Cara continues searching on a computer in the control room.

Edward is waiting outside the lab. The Dauntless, Divergent and Factionless are already there, killing everyone and everything is chaos. Edward pulls a gun on Tris and fires, hitting Christina in the leg. She offers to stay behind to keep an eye on Edward while Marcus and Tris continue to the lab. They find two doors and decide to split up.

Tris is immediately locked in her room and it fills with fog and a voice overhead announces her name, that she is a faction transfer and a Divergent, and that she is second generation. She doesn't know what that means but she doesn't have long to think because the voice announces that she has five minutes to make it through the room before the poison in the fog kills her. Then she has to fight herself. 

Tris and Simulation Tris are equally matched, but Tris realizes they might be the same but they have different goals. Tris needs to get through the door, Simulation Tris has to block it. Tris runs around the edge of the room and makes a gun appear since she is obviously in a simulation and can control it. Simulation Tris becomes Will, but Tris fights her fears and shoots him again, killing Simulation Tris.

Tris moves into the next room and sees Tori fighting Jeanine. She tries to stop Tori from killing her, but Tori just thinks Tris is a traitor and bites her. They fight and Tris tries to explain needing Jeanine to find the important information stored on her computer but not caring what happens to her after that, but Tori is single-minded in her desire to kill Jeanine for killing her Divergent brother. She stabs Jeanine with a huge knife right in the belly.

Four and Uriah arrive then and Tori announces that Tris is a traitor. Four is taken aback but says that Marcus was found in the other room, trapped in a simulation and knows that Tris came with him and they were working together. Tris stands up to Four, telling him he knows why she is there, she's been telling him all along that Marcus knows something important and that Jeanine has whatever that is. She says whatever it is will change everything, but it seems he believes she is a traitor because he really, really hates his father. Yeah Four, we all do.

Uriah leads Tris out to where they have all the traitors and everyone they didn't kill surrounded with guns in a room full of monitors. Christina is there and they wonder what their punishment will be, hopefully cake and naps. Tris explains what happened to her and Christina questions how she could have been in a simulation without an injection, but it must have been in the gas in the room? Soon Evelyn arrives and announces she and the Factionless are taking over. They are the ones surrounding everyone with guns Tris realizes now. Evelyn announces they are going to punish anyone who didn't help during the Erudite takedown. 

Four, Marcus and Caleb enter the room then. Four comes straight to Tris and tells her that she was right. They kiss and then a video starts playing on the screens around them. Four convinced Caleb to find and share the files Jeanine wanted to keep hidden. There is a woman named Amanda speaking. She shares how the world has changed and the video flickers through scenes of extreme violence. She explains that whoever is watching the video will be the government of a society and the hope is, by living isolated away from the violence, they will grow and change and become a better society that will change the world. She says that when they notice people's brains changing and evolving, becoming Divergent, it will be time to open the gates and leave. She then says that she is participating in this as well. She will be removing her own memories and taking on a new identity. She will be called Edith Pryor.
