Tris, Christina and Cara are in a cell in Erudite immediately after the end of Insurgent. The Edith Prior video has been shared and lots of chaos ensued, but Evelyn, Four’s Mom and leader of the Factionless, got everything under control and went through with her plan of keeping everyone who didn't help the Dauntless and Factionless take over Erudite prisoner. They try to figure out who Edith Prior is in relation to Tris but she doesn't know. All she knows is that she's locked up and she needs to get out of the cell and out of the walls of the city. Four said to trust him as she was being herded into her cell, so that's what she's trying to do.
Four comes to see Tris and to let them know that Evelyn is going to have trials under truth serum for all the “traitors” they have locked up and he's going to try to get her to let Tris go first since she can fight the serum. He wants her to come up with a lie good enough to exonerate her, Christina and Cara and knows she can do it because she's a good liar. She lied to him consistently throughout Insurgent. He says that Evelyn wants everyone to stay inside the walls and repair their city, not go out into the world and fix everyone else's problems, which honestly… sounds like a good idea if you are a normal person. Tris wants out. Four does, too.
Tris is successful in lying under the serum, saying that she believed Marcus was under Dauntless orders to break into Jeanine's computer and since she was too cowardly to hold a gun but still wanted to help, she went with him. Christina and Cara aren't included in her release unfortunately.
Evelyn believes Four when he tells her his visit to see Tris was to break up with her and now she wants him to find out about a group of rebels calling themselves Allegiant.
That night, Four and Tris go on a date. They hash out their issues about trust and drink a fizzy clear drink from Erudite, discussing nothing things like Dauntless cake and what the Abnegation treat would be (plain oatmeal, milk, or stale bread). Then they discuss relationships in the factions, how they wouldn't even hold hands until they were married if they were Abnegation or how they would do whatever they want but with protection as Dauntless. They choose a middle ground which includes lots of kissing.
The next day, there is a riot. Edward destroys the Choosing Ceremony bowls with a sledgehammer while people look on, either excited that the factions are being destroyed or worried and confused because the factions are all they've ever known. An Erudite man tries to stop him but he ends up being sledgehammered and then the rioting starts and ends with Edward getting shot in the gut and dying. Tris and Four know they need to leave the city walls. Four also knows that his mother was somehow involved in this and didn't tell him about it.
Things continue to be uneasy. Tris and her Dauntless friends wonder what's outside the walls. Tris breaks up a group of Factionless beating the shit out of a boy wearing Candor colors for wearing Candor colors. They threaten Tris for stopping the fight but she's not afraid. Almost immediately after this, a bag is thrown over Tris's head. She panics, thinking of when she almost died when Al, Peter and Drew tried to throw her in the chasm and starts fighting, but the captors tell her they are the Allegiant and they want her to gather her Dauntless friends and join them in a secret meeting. Back in her room, Tris finds a note from Four, addressing her as Six. Caleb's trial will be the following day. They can't go but he will find out what happens.
The meeting with the Allegiant is led by Johanna from Amity and Cara. There are several people there and they all decide to split into two teams. One group, led by Cara, will go outside the walls while the other, led by Johanna, will try to make things better inside the walls. Tris, Four, Peter, Christina and Uriah, plus a girl who knows how to operate the trains will be the ones to go out. They plan to leave the next night. Privately, Tris asks Four about Caleb and it is implied that he will be executed.
Four goes back to former Dauntless to go through his fear landscapes, seemingly for the last time. He always has heights and small spaces, but his Marcus fear has changed after the public spanking and now he fears becoming his father. His last fear has also changed and involves a zombie Tris? Tris dying? Fears faced for the last time, Four goes to the former Erudite headquarters next to break Caleb out. Because he is Tobias Eaton, a Big Deal™, he can easily go to the cells. It seems that Evelyn often secretly sends people to murder prisoners in the night because no one blinks at him coming and leaving with Caleb. They go to the trains, Caleb still thinking he's going to be executed, even when they jump on and Tris is there. Four decides that Caleb will suffer greater punishment by being forced outside the city walls than if he were simply put to death.
Tris and Four make out on the ride through the city but then they have to get off the train. When they do, they briefly meet up with Christina and Uriah and the others but then the shooting starts and everyone scatters. Tori is killed, but Tris kills her killer. A truck drives up then. It's Johanna and Christina. They collect Tris and drive to where the others are now. Four is there, thank goodness, though he has been grazed by a bullet in the arm. They continue closer to the walls of the city and discover that Amity has lands outside, but they are strictly controlled by serum, because don't you know? Every faction has a serum! The Dauntless serum gives hallucinated realities, Candor’s gives the truth, Amity's gives peace, Erudite's gives death and Abnegation's resets memories.
Outside the walls, Tris sees things she's never seen before. What is vodka? What is Coca-Cola? What is energy drink? Soon they are met by people involved with the program that kept everyone inside Chicago, Amar and Zoey. Amar was Four’s friend that he thought was dead. Maybe others that Tris thought died are also out here, alive somehow. Zoey greets Tris by name and then gives her a photograph of a group of people, including Natalie, her mom. Zoey offers to take them to the headquarters of the Bureau of Genetic Welfare, at the former O'Hare airport.
Wait. What is “airport”? Zoey laughs a little at all the things they don't know, but Peter corrects her. They don't know things because this group kept them inside the city. Four recognizes they have been taken to a sort of control room and Zoey mentions the Bureau being set up here, close enough to the city, to monitor things inside. Tris looks like she's really enjoying seeing everything new, but Four feels out of place. They go to meet David, the person in charge, who is excited to meet everyone, waiting for this moment from the very beginning.
David explains a whole lot. The United States tried to isolate genes, specifically The Murder Gene, and that turned into a genetic cleansing sort of thing with the Impure vs Pure, and then everyone went to war, and then they decided to separate people and experiment on them. The Impures were secluded to see if they could breed out the impurities. The Divergent are the “cured.” Oh, and the Bureau has also been watching everything that they do, but never stepped in to help at all.
They are sent to sleep at this point but everyone is freaked out. On her way out, Tris shows David the photograph and asks him who her mother was and doesn't get much of an answer, only that she left the experiment and came back to them “before she settled into motherhood.” Tris notices he seems wistful when looking at the photograph. Tris finds Cara, who is freaking out, and Caleb, who is freaking out, and Four, who is freaking out. She stays with Four and they kiss of course. He doesn't seem as put off by the constant watching thing as Tris does. They go to sleep.
Four wakes a little bit later and goes for a walk, finding Amar in a garden sort of place. Amar explains that he is Divergent and when Jeanine started killing the Divergents, his death, and others, were faked and they were able to escape with Natalie's help. Another person who escaped is George Woo, Tori’s brother. Oh no. She just died. That's horrible. Natalie is really dead, too, unfortunately.
Early the next day, Tris meets with David who tells her that her mother went into the experiment when Jeanine's predecessor started killing Divergents and then stayed. She joined the Dauntless at 15, actually she was really 16, but because she already had tattoos, she needed to be placed in Dauntless to get used to things, and then she transferred to Abnegation during her Choosing Ceremony. Tris is given all of Natalie's files on a tablet and is then asked by Matthew if he can study her genes, and Four's, because they developed Divergence differently than everyone else.
Four and Tris go to have their genes mapped after she shares a little bit about the tablet with her mother's journal and debates about sharing with Caleb or not. She will, but she wants to read it first alone. They then walk through what was once the airport to a genetic testing room. There they meet Nita, a woman who was from another city’s experiment that failed, and Matthew joins them. They will use microcomputers inserted into their veins to track their genes, testing to see if they have the genetic marker that suggests that their genes are healed and how they are Divergent. Tris has the marker and is thus Genetically Pure, but it turns out that Four is not Divergent at all but has an anomaly that makes him able to fight off the serums. His genes are still broken and he feels broken because of it. Tris tries to assure him that he's exactly the same person he was five minutes ago but he needs time to process his brokenness. Nita catches up to him and says she wants to talk, but without Tris since she's Genetically Pure because she won't understand.
Tris and pretty much everyone but Four go for a ride on an airplane after the gene mapping. They realize their city is basically just a blip in the world and that they literally don't mean much of anything in the grand scheme of things. They see places that were destroyed by the Purity War before they land again.
Upon returning, Tris begins reading her mom's journal. She learns that Natalie is from the Fringe, an area outside the experiments and that her mom was a cop and her dad was a teacher. Her mom lost her temper and killed her dad and buried him in the backyard, prompting Natalie to run away where she immediately killed a man attacking a boy by hitting him with a plank of wood. David found her then and took her in. Caleb approaches before Tris can read more and she still doesn't even want to look at him, so she hides the tablet under her pillow and goes to eat with Uriah and Christina.
Four goes to meet up with Nita and she takes him to a disused area of the compound where all the GDs, the Genetically Damageds, hang out. They either came from a failed city or from the Fringes, like Natalie, but weren't GP or anomalous enough to make a difference. Nita seems bitter about the GDs vs the GPs and asks him to meet up with her later in secret. Four doesn't really know what to think.
Suddenly it's time for Marcus’s trial and everyone wants to watch. Four watches as his father is not sentenced to death by his mother for not fighting against Jeanine and for revealing secrets that should have remained hidden, and for basically being a shithead, but instead is sentenced to expulsion from the city. Four doesn't know what to think or feel.
The next day, Four is pretty cold to Tris. He doesn't seem to care that she went up in an airplane, but he is afraid of heights after all. She tries again to tell him that he's still the same person and that genetically broken doesn't mean anything, but he won't hear it. He snaps that that's not even what he's upset about. It's Marcus, but she didn't even ask him about that. She heard about his sentence of course, but she really didn't think Four would care one way or the other. He changes the subject to Natalie's journal and Tris continues reading. She learns that Natalie went into the city into Dauntless because of her tattoos and was supposed to choose Erudite at her Choosing Ceremony because that's where the enemy was, but she wrote in a message to David that she and Andrew Prior, Tris and Caleb's dad who was originally Erudite, were going to choose Abnegation together.
Tris continues reading and then discusses with Zoey and Matthew and it seems that David was upset about Natalie being with Andrew and choosing Abnegation instead of Erudite, but was it because he was jealous? Andrew didn't want to be in Erudite anymore because he was friends with Jeanine until he witnessed her doing inhumane fear testing experiments on Factionless in exchange for food before she became the leader. Yikes.
Later, Tris shares the tablet with Caleb even though she doesn't want to and he shares with her that he discovered that Amanda Ritter, aka Edith Prior, who is Andrew's aunt from seven generations ago, worked for the Bureau and was one of the original creators of the experiment. She signed a consent form agreeing to go into the experiment, to wipe her memories, and to pass on her healed genes to at least two children. She also gave consent for her children and her children's children, etc, to continue in the experiment until the Bureau deemed it complete. Caleb wonders about the legality of giving future consent to your descendents. Tris wonders if the outside world was as bad as Edith led them to believe. She then gets mad at Caleb for choosing Erudite, thinking he must feel justified since Edith was apparently Erudite and so was Andrew and Natalie was supposed to be. She runs off, straight to Four, and wants to “peel away all the layers of clothing between [them], strip everything away that separates [them], the past and the present and the future.”
That night, Four sneaks out to meet Nita without telling anyone where he's going. Nita wanted this kept secret even from Tris and Four isn't really okay with that, but goes along anyway. Nita takes Four outside of the Bureau and into the Fringe where she briefly introduces him to two people, Mary and Rafi, who are leaders of an uprising. They want to prove that GDs and GPs are basically the same and share proof that they have of GPs starting wars a long time ago. What's the point in labeling people if the same class war stuff keeps happening no matter what? Four doesn't really even get to speak with Mary and Rafi and it almost just seems like Nita has a crush on Four and wants him to think she's cool or something. It's weird.
Back at the Bureau, Four struggles with wanting to tell Tris, but he knows that she's strong and doesn't need protecting. Nita says she doesn't want him to tell Tris to keep her safe, but she doesn't need that, so he tells her the next day. Nita says she has proof that she wants to show Four and he wants Tris to see it, too.
Nita isn't pleased that Four told Tris and Tris is certain that Nita has ulterior motives. Nita and another GD show them old war photos, assuming that the people in the photos were generically pure because as far as anyone knows, that's the only difference in people. She then tells them that the government created the serums, the memory serum specifically, and she wants to steal it. She says the government can reset any experiment whenever they want to and they tried to do it with Jeanine's help in Chicago. Tris is doubtful that Nita only wants to steal the memory serum, but Four agrees to help. He thinks jealousy is clouding Tris’s judgement and that she makes snap judgements of people. She's been right so far though.
After randomly beating up Caleb for no discernable reason, other than the fact that he told her their mother once told him that everyone has some evil inside them and the first step to loving them is to see that evil inside yourself, Tris goes to see Matthew. He talks about vaccines and using them for serums. Tris then tells Matthew that she heard something about the serums the day before. He picks up immediately that she heard whatever she heard from Nita and is immediately worried. Tris shrugs off Nita’s desire to steal the memory serum and he says no, that's not what she's after. She's after the Death Serum that can be used to kill a lot of people very quickly if aerosolized. They rush to find David but on the way, there is an explosion and Tris sees Uriah get hurt. Tris and Matthew find Nita and several other armed people demanding David give them access to a door.
Tris sends Matthew away to get help and then watches as Nita threatens to and then injects David with a terror serum, the same one Jeanine had and modified. Nita tries to force David to give them the door code but he just points toward Tris in his serum induced terror and says Her. Tris takes David hostage, not caring about him one way or the other, but knowing that Nita needs him. Then Tris gets shot.
After all this, Tris and a lot of other people are being treated for their injuries. Tris finds Christina who is waiting to hear about Uriah but doesn't think anyone in the Bureau is going to tell her anything about him because he is Divergent, GP, and she is not. Tris doesn't know what to think because she's only interested in finding Four and making sure he's okay. Christina has to break it to Tris that Four was arrested for disabling the alarms that allowed Nita's attack to happen.
Tris manages to go see Four and updates the people holding him and several others on David's condition. He might lose his ability to walk but they don't know yet. They also don't have a tally of the injured. Four is languishing about his part in all the destruction. He has realized that Tris was right about Nita and it gets worse when Tris can't even look at him. She tells him that Nita was after a Death Serum and wanted to start a war and that she was right. She doesn't know if she can ever look at him the same way again.
Four is questioned, but the investigators don't know that, even though he didn't get any Truth Serum because he can manipulate it, everyone working with Nita was inoculated against Truth Serum and fed a story to protect themselves. Four says he was friends with Nita and that she asked him for help and he agreed but he didn't know what she was going to do. The investigators believe him and give him probation as a punishment. He asks after Nita and learns that she will be imprisoned for the rest of her life. The GPs don't believe in capital punishment for the GDs.
Tris meanwhile checks in on Uriah who is in a coma and then wants to share with Cara what she learned from Matthew. She also thinks about how when she went to see Four, she wanted to tell him that their relationship is over, but she couldn't.
Four, basically free to do what he wants, minus not being allowed to enter certain laboratories, finds himself watching the cameras in Chicago. First he sees Johanna and Marcus speaking. Marcus, though expelled from the city, is still there and wants to work with Johanna who wants to reestablish the Factions. He thinks he can help because he was a leader before and is sure that people will follow him. Johanna doesn't like Marcus because he's an abusive dick, which he tries to deny, but she agrees to let him help anyway. Four then watches Evelyn, who has just been made aware that Marcus is still in the city. She looks like she's been crying, but Four doesn't know why.
Tris goes to see David the next day, still struggling with not being able to look at Four and with Uriah being in a coma. David, now wheelchair bound, asks Tris to join his group of councilors. Even though she hates David for his role in helping Jeanine kill the Abnegation, she knows that it's important to keep your enemies close. She agrees to join and learns she will be touring the Fringe and attending committee meetings, but won't have any real leadership responsibilities because she is so young. David reveals that the reason he wants Tris’s help is because she was willing to sacrifice him to keep the Death Serum safe. She asks what would have happened if Nita broke through the door to get to the serum and he reveals that there is a serum that not even GPs can withstand and that Nita would not have wanted to encounter it.
Four talks briefly with Peter who is feeling tiny looking at maps of Chicago and the city and the world and realizing that he's insignificant. Peter wonders how Four is feeling now that he's in the Tris Hate club along with him and Caleb, but soon he goes with Cara to a meeting with Matthew and Tris and the rest. They all want to shut the Bureau down. Tris wants to give everyone a truth serum, Matthew acknowledging that even GPs can be susceptible to it, because she wants David to tell everyone what he's actually done, killing the Abnegation, wanting to shut down the experiments, etc etc. Tris will work to get to know David and attend his council meetings and whatever to get close to him. Caleb and Cara will work on the serum. Christina and Four will work with Reggie, another GD who is friends with Nita, who might know about the security measures beyond the door where the serums are kept.
Tris goes into the Fringe with several scientists. Amar and George go to act as bodyguards. Tris doesn't like what she sees in the Fringe, basically the people there are just like the Factionless, homeless and hungry. Amar blames their GDness for the way they behave but like, it's obvious they are homeless and scared. Gunshots ring out and everyone scatters. Tris is pulled to safety by a Fringe woman who is shocked to learn that Tris came from Chicago, and she hopes that it has been shut down because it just perpetuates the idea that Genetically Damaged people are bad. Tris agrees and leaves to help the scientists, rescuing George from being held at gunpoint.
On the way back to the Bureau, after the scientists set up surveillance equipment, Tris learns that Amar like-liked Four but Four didn't like-like him back. Now he like-likes George, but the Bureau is not fond of relationships that don't lead to procreation, so he asks that Tris not say anything. He thinks she and Four are good for each other because she stops him from being so obsessive all the time, but she doesn't say that they are probably broken up.
Four meanwhile obsessively watches the surveillance inside the city, certain that his dangerous parents are up to no good. Then he sees an army of Allegiant attacking the Factionless and stockpiling weapons. He alerts his friends and they all watch on, surprised to see Marcus working with Johanna, who has become a soldier instead of her passive Amity self. They have become the leaders and want to restore the Factions and are fighting to do so.
When Tris gets back from her Fringe trip, she finds Caleb and Peter, but no one else. She's wary of speaking to Caleb after punching him in the face, but he assumes she's looking for Four and tells her he was last in the Genealogy room, a room with the family trees of everyone in the City. She finds him in there and knows he's obsessing over his parents. She thinks about their relationship and their parents’ relationships and knows that she will always choose him, even if they fight every day like her parents used to, and she tells him so.
Tris goes with David to the council meeting and learns that they are going to reset Chicago with the memory serum virus because the Allegiant are fighting the Factionless. He says that Evelyn found a stockpile of Death Serum in Erudite headquarters and is going to use it, so they have to reset their memories to preserve the experiment, and they are going to do it to all the remaining experiments as well. It's clear to Tris that the experiment is the only thing David cares about. He doesn't value anyone's lives at all.
When Tris meets back up with Four later, he's with Cara and she tells them about David's reset plans. She then decides they should use the memory serum on David and the council instead of the experiments to get rid of their mindset that the Genetically Damaged are inferior. Does she really want to do to them what they were going to do to everyone else? It's the same Are you going to kill everyone in Erudite after they killed everyone in Abnegation? question all over again.
Matthew is consulted about the effects of the Memory Serum and how it won't make you forget things like tying your shoes and walking and talking and stuff, but they can likely erase the parts of the council’s memories about the Genetically Pure and the Genetically Damaged. There is a window after the memory is wiped where the mind is pliable and can quickly learn or relearn things, so they'll use that bit of time to help restore memories of history and jobs and other important things. They are going to deploy the airplanes to reset the experiments within 48 hours, so they will have to steal some memory serum to use on the council before then.
Christina and Peter let Tris and Four know that Uriah is braindead and the doctors are going to remove him from life support. They convince the doctors somehow to let him stay alive until they can alert his mother and brother who are still inside the city. Tris is going to talk to Nita to find out how to get past the door to acquire the memory serum while Four, Christina and Peter go into the city with Amar to inoculate Uriah's and Christina’s families just in case they can't stop the memory serum from being released. Tris learns that breaking into the room with the serums releases an aerosolized version of the Death Serum and no one can resist it, not even GPs like herself. But if she's immune to the truth serum which they say no other Divergents or GPs are, is she immune to the Death Serum, too?
Four and the group that are going into the city inoculate themselves against the memory serum, too, but Four notices that Peter only pretends to. He realizes that Peter is voluntarily giving up his memories to go back inside the city. Christina asks Four if they are willing to let Marcus and Evelyn destroy each other and the city with death serum in their fight if they don't stop the memory serum from being released. He decides that he's going to try to erase just their memories, maybe even just one of them, to hopefully stop them from killing each other and everyone else.
The group gathers to discuss who is going to sacrifice themself to retrieve the serum. All eyes turn not to Tris who really really doesn't want to sacrifice herself, but to Caleb, who pretty much everyone has, without so many words, decided is worthless. He turned traitor on Tris and helped Jeanine and so he is the one who should die trying to save everyone else.
Later, Tris struggles privately with Four about Caleb, but he reminds her of the Abnegation's thoughts that sometimes a sacrifice is the only way someone can show you that they love you. Tris realizes that she would rather Caleb die than herself or Four or Christina. Four thanks Tris for never changing her mind about him even when she found out that he was Genetically Damaged, for thinking that he is whole and enough and perfect just the way he is. They Fade to Black after this.
The next day, Four works with Caleb to teach him how to shoot because he'll need to be able to fight his way to get to the serum. Caleb also learns about explosives and they all plan routes and work through everything that they'll do that night to save the experiments and stop future division between the GPs and the GDs. Four goes to visit Uriah while Tris goes to a council meeting. Along the way, Four encounters Matthew who explains why he is fighting on their side. He loved a GD even though he wasn't supposed to. She was hurt by a group of GPs and they didn't get into any trouble because the rest of the GPs saw the girl as nothing because she was just a GD. Matthew has hated everyone since then. He didn't think Nita was going about her plan the right way and didn't want to help with that one, but he's on board now. He even would have sacrificed himself if Caleb hadn't volunteered.
Before they split up to their individual plans, Tris and Four have a quiet time together and Tris wonders how their lives will be after everything is done. She goes to be with Caleb while Four and the others go out into the city to get Uriah's family to bring them back to see him before he dies, and inoculate them and Christina’s family. Christina fakes a bathroom break and slashes the tires on the vehicle Amar is driving so Four can “go find another vehicle and meet back up with them” while he's actually going to decide which of his parents’ memories to remove. Peter insists on coming with him, knowing he's up to something while everyone else continues on foot. Whose memories will Four erase? Evelyn’s or Marcus's?
Tris and Caleb spend the little bit of time they have left trying to reconnect. Caleb has a backpack with a bodysuit and bombs and everything he'll need to make it through the corridor and hopefully survive long enough to reach the serums. Unfortunately, an alarm goes off and there's an announcement of an emergency curfew. Tris, Caleb and Matthew run toward the protected room, but then Tris makes them split up, sending Matthew to cause a distraction by shooting a gun into the air. It doesn't help. Tris and Caleb near the door and guards with guns approach. Tris pretends to take Caleb hostage, demanding he give over the backpack of supplies. She doesn't want him to die because she loves him, and that's what sacrifice means. There's not enough time for her to put the suit on, but she's determined that she is strong enough to survive the Death Serum.
Four and Peter head toward Erudite headquarters where Evelyn now resides. On the way, Four asks Peter why he didn't inoculate himself and then Peter tries to steal the memory serum from Four, but Four elbows him in the teeth. Peter reveals that he doesn't want to be like he is right now anymore. He could have just had a nice conversation with Four but instead he tried to hurt him and steal from him and he liked it but he doesn't like that he liked it. He hates the person that he is and wants a redo. They make it in to see Evelyn and Four tells her that he came to her to wipe her memories in hopes of saving everyone. He says he's afraid of her because she is acting just like Marcus and he wants to save her from that and be her son again. She hugs him.
Tris explodes the doors and feels the Death Serum invading her body. She wills herself to keep going even though it would be so easy to just die and be with her parents again. She fights the serum off and makes it to the room where the serums are stored and breathes in its fresh air. She made it. She survived. She defeated the serum. And then David is there with a gun. Just as Tris releases the memory serum, David kills her.
Four gives Peter the memory serum and he takes it, not wanting Four to tell him anything about himself and let him become an entirely new person. Evelyn, memory unmodified, and Four meet with Marcus and Johanna. Evelyn offers to leave the city and stop the Factionless from fighting if they will agree to let the people choose how they want to live and who they want to be led by, as long as it is not Marcus. He pitches a fit and refuses to agree because he is the leader of the Allegiant and the rightful leader of the entire city but Johanna shuts that down immediately. She is the leader of the Allegiant and she agrees to Evelyn's terms.
Back at the Bureau, everyone who wasn't inoculated has had their memories erased. They were led to believe there was a freak accident that took their memories, but they were on the verge of creating equality for those considered Genetically Damaged. They are told the truth: that their genes are complex, that everyone is different and no one is Genetically Pure or Genetically Damaged. Four also learns what happened to Tris. Cara explains that she was immune to the Death Serum but David shot her. He cannot be punished for that because he is a leader who was defending himself from a rebel, because that is what Tris is remembered as. No one takes Tris's death well at all.
Soon enough, it's time to take Uriah off life support and Four loses another person he cared for. He even attempts to take the memory serum himself but Christina is able to convince him that that would make him a coward, someone that Tris couldn't love.
Time passes. The city is healing. People are moving into Chicago from the Fringe or moving out to other cities. Peter is still kind of a dick. Four and all his friends gather to ride the zip line and scatter Tris’s ashes, which Four is terrified of, but he does it anyway, falling into his friends’ arms at the end. They get on the train and ride away. Four knows that life is full of hurt and damage, but now, he's learning that life can be mended, too.
